    Renato Soni Levi - Trident

A rare opportunity to own a beautifully restored piece of racing history. Designed by Renato ( Soni ) Levi in 1961, Trident was undoubtedly one of the most significant power boat designs in her size and class of the era and her race career is probably the longest of almost any power boat. Viva Tridante campaigned mainly the Cowes to Torquay races from 1962 through until 1975 totalling 13 years in all during which time she remained very competitive. Now offered for sale in stunning condition throughout. With her new Mercruiser 5 litre petrol engine she delivers fantastic performance.  This boat is proudly on display outside our office where she regularly causes traffic jams as people stop to admire her beautiful lines. The seller has now moved into his next project and the asking price has now been reduced by £10,000.00 to get her sold before Easter. Please call Philip Taylor for further details and viewing arrangements. Viewings can be arranged 7 days a week.

    Performance

One of the major decisions of this project was one of what power to provide with the big question being asked, should a pair of racing engines be fitted ?

After much deliberations it was decided that as her racing days were over that she should be restored to become a stylish day cruiser and so a for reason of power to weight, a single Mercuiser 5 litre fuel injected petrol engine was chosen to offer a good turn of speed with economy.

After 4 years of work Viva was taken down to Lake Yard in Poole where she was gently lowered to the water. After half and hour spent checking her over, she was fired up and taken for a run out across Poole Harbour. The engine choice proved to be perfect as she came out on to the plane and achieved 32 knots on her GPS at the recommended running in throttle setting at 2,600 rpm. Once the boat is run in, the engine will be free to rev up to 5,000 rpm and so a very healthy top speed is expected.

    History

Trident was originally designed for Don Shead by Soni Levi and built by W.C Clark of Cowes. It is not certain how many examples were made by Clarks but we think that perhaps 4 or 5 are likely. The prototypes were unique for their time in that they were fitted (despite the concerns of the designer  with a triple engine set up which accounted for the names being given each of them which all incorporated "Tri".  However following the 1963 Cowes to Torquay race, it was decided to revert to a pair of Ardon Volvo straight six engines each producing 300 Hp coupled to a pair of racing Volvo outdrives.

With this information in mind, it was subsequently of immense satisfaction to the current owner that when cleaned back to bear wood, the transom showed the original 3 cut outs where the triple engines had been previously fitted.

Viva Tridante appears in the racing lists that were compiled from 1967 through until 1971 and her owner/drivers name Derek Smith appears amongst societies big names from the day.
