From the board of Americas cup designer Warwick Collins, we are proud to present one of the limited edition light displacement fast blue water cruisers that set the way forward for fast passage making and easy sailing.

Teak decks, tiller steering to semi-balanced rudder and the renowned Warwick Collins tandem wing keel. 'Sparkle III' is a bespoke 12m designed for the commissioning owner for two people to sail easily without leaving the cockpit.

From the same stable as the likes of 'Flying Boat', 'Fighter' and 'Fondue', 'Sparkle III' has the same hull ratios re, length and beam to cut through the water effortlessly whilst enjoying the magnificent attributes of the keel which gives the feeling of a much larger, sea kindly boat with regard to stability and motion not usually found in a shallow draft yacht. A truly impressive blue water cruiser.

GENERAL COMMENTS

Tandem 39 sloop in West system strip plank cedar, teak decks and featuring the Warwick Collins Tandem wing keel. A truer composite hull.

This keel type is noted to have a lower centre of gravity, better directional stability and damping of pitching and rolling.

Well equipped and maintained to a high standard with upgrading by her present owners. A viable alternative to a GRP yacht with the enhanced warmth and insulation of the wooden hull and interior encapsulated by robust GRP.

2010 survey available. Viewing recommended

The first owner, had her built and kept her until about 2000.

During this period Sparkle did an Atlantic circuit and then sailed in the Med before being brought back to the UK for sale.

The second owner, kept her from about 2000 until he sold to us in 2010 and during this period she sailed back to The Med and then, latterly, in Dutch waters.

I mention this history because two experienced owners keeping a boat for 10 years is a testament to her good manners and purposefulness.

Both were previously keen dinghy sailors which is one reason why Sparkle has tiller steering with the hoop and tiller extension at the working end of the tiller. In benign conditions the helmsman can sit out on the coaming and steer using the extension. In bad weather the helmsman can steer in the shelter of the sprayhood.

We have sailed Sparkle in all sorts of weather in the North Sea, the English Channel, Biscay, the Irish Sea and off the West Coast.

In a blow the helm is firm but manageable. One experience worth mentioning is from the trip back from Holland in 2010. We sheltered from a gale for a day in Brighton Marina. By lunchtime on the following day the SW wind had moderated somewhat and we set sail for Portsmouth under staysail and main with two reefs. Bear in mind that we were relatively inexperienced with the boat at this point. We were beating into a rough sea with a steady 30 knots of wind gusting to 38 knots across the deck. The helm remained comfortably balaned & manageable throughout. A friend who was with us and who was himself a boat owner of some experience commented that she was “the most reassuring boat he’d ever sailed on”.

Sparkle III is the fifth cruising boat I have owned. Two of the others were tiller steered, namely a Contessa 32 and a Victoria 34. The original Tandem 38 was designed for an owner who wanted dimensions and loads similar to his previous boat, a Sadler 34. See the article from Yachting Monthly October 1988 which explains the design’s genesis, Fondue, the Tandem 38 tested.
