General Description

Although the Memory class was born in the early 70's from the hand of designer Tony Robinson, the inspiration behind her dates back from way before. The practicality of the open layout together with the shoal draft and centreplate has the traits of a Brightlingsea fishing smack, equally at home taking the ground at low tide or slipped onto a trailer, ideal for today's leisure market.

Since then over 140 Memory's have been built and are now a well proven classics in their own right; safe, easily handled yet fast boats with numerous wins to their credit in Old Gaffers' Association events.

The Memory has been fitted out in many different ways over the years but the boat remains true to the original concept of simplicity and function. The builders philosophy has been to use the very best of modern and traditional materials and craftsmanship, to give an uncomplicated yet beautiful boat of which any owner can be truly proud. The gaff rig is very practical and easy to use, the large sail area can be simply set, controlled and reefed from the large cockpit.

Designed originally as an 'open' boat as you see with 'Jenny' the accommodation is modest but practical on the standard Memory, with two full sized berths and some storage in a 'vee' formation in the snug little cabin under the foredeck. Access is by a hatch & small pair of doors.

Ballast
The Memory is ballasted with internal ballast, as were her wooden ancestors. As designed, this is lead ingots contained within compartments on either side of the centreplate case. This is of course removable, making the Memory very light for manoeuvring on shore and at about one ton fully ballasted, including trailer, means she can easily be towed behind a substantial car or 4X4. The 50Kg centreplate is designed to fit under the cockpit sole, and is easily raised on it's own block and tackle.

Joinery
This is carried out to a high standard using solid mahogany for the curved cockpit seats, coamings, rubbing bands and so on. The cockpit sole is of resinous, straight grained fir in keeping with yachts of this era.

Spars, Sails & Rigging
The solid spars are made by 'Collars' in the traditional method using 'clear and best' spar grade quality Oregon Pine with Ash for the leathered gaff and boom jaws.

The working sails are tan 6oz terylene, the mainsail has two rows of slab reefing points and the jib is equipped with a bronze Wycombe martin roller furling gear enabling the sails to be handled from the cockpit.

For racing, a jackyard topsail with its associated yards and rigging can be used.

The standard keel stepped mast is substantially stayed by four 6mm stainless steel shrouds and a forestay braced against the chain bobstay.

Exterior Fittings
All of the metal fittings on the Memory are robustly made.
