SELWAY FISHER DESIGN 5 METRE SKIFF
CONCEIVED, designed and built to row and sail the length of the Thames.
SELWAY FISHER DESIGNS produced a design outline against my specification. This included had to look good, have good directional stability for rowing, sail well and accommodate 4 plus ample supplies when spectating at Henley Regatta.
BUILDING was undertaken as a retirement project and was featured in the Classic Boat Magazine.
CONSTRUCTION cedar strip planking plus glass fabric and epoxy coating. Watertight buoyancy lockers in bow and stern.
RIG a single loose footed sail is carried on a long carbon fibre spar this enables the boat to be rowed without the risk of injury from a boom. Since reefing is not possible a second small sail is carried this can be laced direct to the mast for sailing in strong winds.
OPERATION the boat has just a halyard, a main sheet, a double ended tack line and a line to recover the centre board. When tacking the tack line is released, the spar pulled vertical and released to leeward of the mast, at the same time the leeward end of the tack line is tensioned.
PERFORMANCE short tacking is practical with the spar to windward of the mast. The ideal conditions for fast and exhilarating sailing have proved to be on the open waters of the Morbihan, Milford Haven, Fowey and Coniston, accounts of these expeditions were also published in the Classic Boat Magazine.
COMPLETE with oars, paddles, fenders, fitted cover, combination launching trolley and road trailer.
