    Jeanneau - Sun Odyssey 409

The Sun Odyssey 409 represents the first of a new generation of Sun Odyssey sailboats. It’s both a capable cruising boat and a club racing boat. Jeanneau set out to up-grade virtually all the important aspects of the boat where possible. Jeanneau is known for its advanced design and engineering of performance cruisers, while still careful to offer boats at a competitive price-point and this model is no exception.

    Key Features

    • Classic aluminium mast with double spreaders
    • Bow thruster installed in a tunnel with dedicated batteries
    • 2 leather-covered steering wheels with compasses at each steering position
    • Folding cockpit table with storage, cup holders and stainless steel handrail
    • Fine Teak interior laminated panels with solid wood trim around galley, companionway and cabinetry
    • Forward owner’s cabin with central berth and storage
    • Saloon with U-shaped seating area to starboard, wrap-around cushions and storage
    • Saloon dining table with wood fiddles and removable pedestal legs
    • L-galley to port with glass separator between galley counter and seating area

The Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 409 was specifically designed for “performance cruising”. The well-known French naval architect, Philippe Briand, designed her. She’s an easy boat to single-hand, or short-hand with all headsail sheeting running back to the twin helms. Her beamy hull coupled with a hard chine, running from amidships aft, provides form stability along with robust interior space.

The deck is fabricated using an injection moulding called, Prisma process, producing a precise ratio of resin to glass, strength, light weight and rigidity. Both inside and outside of all mouldings are finished off with no rough sides to cover up with a thin fiberglass liner or fabric. It’s a more expensive process than a hand lay-up but saves labour hours, weight, and reduces harmful emissions by 90%. The keel is cast iron.

The layout on deck is that of a boat fit for multiple functions, be it cruising, lying at anchor, or entertaining. With all lines running aft through covered channels and all hatches being flush-mounted, she presents clean and orderly lines whether at the dock or underway. Line storage lockers under the helm seats keeps the deck clear of the spaghetti that can be cumbersome to guests and troublesome when racing around the buoys.

For cruising, not surprisingly, Jeanneau has once again teamed up with Harken to provide the deck and rigging hardware.

The layout of the cockpit makes it functional for both entertaining while at anchor and line handling when sailing with passengers.

A centre cockpit table serves as a focal point and a brace point when underway. A pivoting GPS mount can go on the aft end. Bench seats have high seatbacks and thick cushions for support. Cockpit lockers serve for storing gear. The foredeck is completely uncluttered with sheets routed through covered runs back to the cockpit.

Below decks, this Sun Odyssey 409 is available with the three cabin layout, with the master stateroom forward that includes an owner’s choice of outfitting it with  an en-suite head together with an upgraded mattress.

There’s plenty of natural light coming in through eight separate hull ports and overhead hatches. Jeanneau uses the latest generation of Alpi teak finish and matt varnish. LED lighting provides the artificial light.

A large storage space aft is accessed through the head and from the port cockpit locker. With the three stateroom layouts, the two guest staterooms are positioned across the stern and accessed from both sides of the companionway. In all instances, A wet head is positioned aft and to port of the companionway.
