The revolutionary new F-RIB 275 Folding RIB has a 3-section articulated FOLDING RIGID HULL so that:
- Assembled, it retains the performance, stability and durability advantages of a conventional RIB.
- Folded, it is much easier to transport and store, taking up little if any more space than an inflatable floor boat.
The hull sections have interlocking tabs and slots, held together by the pressure in the tubes. Once assembled it's really difficult to tell they fold - most people don't notice until you tell them.
SAILING TODAY Magazine recently tested the F-RIB 275 and said "Handles just like a standard RIB... more stable than a simple inflatable boat... can carry a greater payload and take a bigger outboard... with a 5hp motor we were making 8 knots with two on board and planing at 14 knots with one"
If you are used to a floppy-bottomed inflatable, changing to a hard-bottomed folding RIB will be something of a revolution. At the most basic level, it's very reassuring to "stand on something solid". And the F-RIB design (ignoring the fact it folds) seems to be unusually stable, particularly in the 275 model. Having a solid hull with a defined underwater shape - not dependent on where people sit etc - also makes them a lot better to row.
However the biggest difference of all will come under power, when you'll find small engines achieve higher speeds, whilst with larger engines you'll be able to push along at higher speeds even when conditions are a bit choppy.
The 275 is rated up to 15hp but we've found 10hp is more than adequate, achieving speeds in excess of 20 knots one-up and 17-18 knots with 2 or even 3 on board. The 275 is perfectly capable of taking 15hp but the disadvantage is weight; 15hp motors are much bigger lumps to move about, an important consideration in the portable boat market.
Back to the F-RIB 275's main and unique selling point though: the hull itself folds for easier transport and storage. This means it will fit in the back of a car, or on the deck of a yacht (or even in a large locker) much more easily than non-folding RIBs. It makes a proper RIB available to lots of people who didn't think they had the space for one.
