    Sovereign - 400

This Sovereign 400 'Kaiso' was designed by Naval Architect, Rob Humphreys, and built by Sovereign Yachts in England. She is an ideal passage making performance cruiser, built to a high standard of construction and benefits from quality fittings such as Lewmar winches and hatches.

She comes from an era where boats were designed for sailing rather than being built to sell in volumes at boat shows, this means that she is sea kindly however has a smaller (although deep and well protected) cockpit and smaller internal volume than found in some latter day designs.

Set up for performance she has a traveller in front of the helm and oversize Lewmar 54 primary winches, her deep cockpit makes her a safe comfortable boat and her folding wheel provides extra room when moving around the wheel. The elliptical lead fin keel is of lead with a ballast ratio of 0.46 which means that she is stiffer and more reliable in tougher weather conditions and she will hold sail for longer compared to many lighter cruising boats of a similar size.

Her interior joinery of contrasting wood gives her a modern light feel and demonstrates the attention to detail in her build compared to most modern / cheaper production brands. She sleeps eight in a master forward ensuite cabin, two aft cabins with day head and saloon.

Her aft cabin which is accessed via the aft head, easily converts to a utility storage cabin "garage" and is a real benefit for those wanting to cruise longer distances. She benefits from opening port lights and plenty of storage throughout, and a drop leaf saloon table makes her very spacious.

The Sovereign 400 is designed and built to meet the requirements of the CE directive 94/25/CE (Category A - 'Ocean') for recreational craft.

Note - this vessel is currently shrink wrapped for winter protection although she is still accessible by ladder at ground level.

    Owners Comments

I have done many thousands of miles cruising on "Kaiso" and found her safe, enjoyable and rewarding to sail. Her specification has been gradually upgraded in recent years and most recently with safety gear for long distance cruising.

She was launched in 2007 in Southampton, UK and sailed across the Atlantic towards the end of the year. She has been widely sailed in the Caribbean, being used for pleasure cruising and occasional skippered chartering and regatta use. In the last two years she has been used for cruising on the Eastern seaboard.

    Humphreys Yacht Design

Humphreys Yacht Design boasts a portfolio of work that is as diverse as it is successful. Founded in 1974, HYD’s roots lie in the design of racing yachts and small custom sailing yachts, but over the years the office has expanded into the series-production and large custom sectors, for both sailing and motor yachts.

HYD founder, Rob Humphreys, has over thirty years experience in production yacht design, commencing with the Conquest 23 Mini Tonner in 1978 and then, soon after, the Trapper 950 – the most famous of which, Roller Coaster, finished second at the 1979 Half Ton world championship. From there followed a wide range of very popular and now sought after production yacht designs, such as the Contessa 33, Contessa 27, Sigma 400 and the Gib’Sea 414, to name but a few.

HYD’s current range of production yacht designs for Oyster, Elan and Southerly are built on long-standing relationships with each company, going back almost two decades. The portfolio includes luxury global cruisers such as the Oyster 82, performance cruiser-racers like the Elan 410 and affordable cruising boats such as the Impression 344.
