NEXT COURSE October 27!A hands-on one-day course in marine diesel engine maintenance. Based near Lewes in East Sussex we are unique in teaching this subject using a live marine diesel engine in a dedicated workshop.
We believe that a practical subject is best learned by getting involved. Students get to dismantle and service the fuel system and to start the engine, if it doesn’t go you haven’t got it right yet… So we look at what did or didn’t work and do it again until it does go, just as you would have to do at sea.
The course is delivered by a yacht-owning Commercial Yachtmaster with extensive hands-on experience and a love of good engineering. The course is highly accessible, taught with patience and an understanding that not everyone is naturally adept at practical subjects. We often teach couples which works very well, a situation at sea can be complex and in the event of an emergency the more people onboard who know what they are at, the better.
We have a collection of ‘teaching aids’, mostly failed and corroded components and a couple of sectioned or dismantled engines for teaching purposes.
We also cover bilge pumps, toilets and lifejackets.
Stuff we are giving away: OK don’t get too excited! These items are here because they are a) dead useful and b) sometimes hard to find. We have battery terminal cleaners which do the job perfectly and heavy duty zip-loc bags to make getting used filters etc off the boat easier and cleaner. Free to every student.
Tea, coffee and biscuits are freely available – please bring a packed lunch. There is no minimum number for a course. We run courses during the week mainly and can even split the course into a couple of evenings too
