The Deben Lugger is an 18’ traditionally styled dayboat built in GRP with 2-pack foam buoyancy and Iroko hardwood trim. Her balanced lug yawl rig uses carbon fibre masts/spars. As carbon fibre is lighter, stiffer & stronger than conventional alloy or timber she doesn't require stays (Shroulds) making her quicker/easier to rig while giving improved performance & reduced maintenance.
Her sails are highly detailed and made by a traditional sail maker in either cream or tan Clipper Cloth Canvas with slab reefing. The whole rig stows within the length of the boat for trailing or storage. She has a shallow fore foot for easy beaching and trailer recovery drawing to 15" at the aft end. This shallow keel gives her great windward ability/stability and enables her to sail in as little as 16" of water. Making her ideal for exploring estuaries & creeks.
Her New England style ‘Barn Door’ type rudder gives a light balanced feel with minimal weather helm, being the same depth as the keel it can be left mounted while beaching, sailing in the shallows or mooring.
The foiled GRP centreplate is housed within a sealed case, it's up-haul mechanism is out of harms way in the storage locker.
She has been designed to accommodate a spray-hood this covers the flat area above the storage lockers making a great lounging area or with the extension slats & added camping tent a comfortable sleeping platform. Moving aft and keeping with the lounging theme she has two removable iroko timber seat panels allowing for the helm to get out of the wind and shelter low down on the sole boards. These panels also store the fire extinguisher and can accommodate canvas storage bins, for fenders, warps, etc.
Her aft locker is vented and is designed to take a 12L remote outboard motor fuel tank the line of this passes into the outboard well. The well is off set to port and allows a modern 4-stroke outboard engine of up to 6HP to be mounted and tilted clear of the water while sailing or when moored. Launching & recovery could not be easier on her A-frame multi-roller swing beam trailer. The rear beam locates the boat and centralizes her, while the increased number of rollers reduces friction & effort required to launch & recover from the water. This trailer has a galvanized steel chassis with an un-braked suspension axle, 10” wheels, jockey wheel & winch. It is well balanced and tows beautifully. Down either side of the cockpit she has two substantial iroko grab rails for securing safety harnesses, fenders, warps, etc to.
