Watch a Tornado at Sea Flipping a Clipper Round the World Yacht
With the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race coming to an end in London tomorrow, a video has been released of the Great Britain Clipper team caught in the middle of an ocean spout (a tornado at sea).
The short, but dramatic moment happened back in January during the eighth race of the tour between Australia and Singapore. The episode was caught by a camera attached to the mast, capturing the 70-foot racing yacht flipped on to its side, throwing some crew members into the water.
Given that all the crews competing in the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race are mostly made up of novices with varying experience of yacht racing, the scenes in the video really show a moment of panic. In the video, Paul Hardy, a 43-year-old IT consultant from Brighton recollects the terrifying moment as the footage shows him desperately holding on as the ship turns sideways.
