10 things you didn't know you could do at the PSP Southampton Boat Show
Here’s a round up of all the fun things you can try at this the amazing PSP Southampton Boat Show:
1) Sail the famous Global Challenge 72 racing yacht
What could be more exhilarating than jumping aboard the 72ft world Ocean Race Yacht for a unique adventure on the Solent? Prices start at £54 and you can enjoy a 1hr 30 minute sailing trip on this incredible offshore race yacht. Enjoy the thrill of taking the helm or grinding the winches as part of a 12-strong team. Book ahead and remember to bring your waterproofs!
2) Reach new heights at the Active Nation Climbing Centre
This year there will be an all new Climbing Centre at the Active Nation stand A132 in the Arena. Here people of all ages can tackle the bouldering wall, embark on an assault course and find out what happens on the fan descender! Equipment is provided and the outdoor skills tryout is included in the price of your ticket. All you have to do is turn up and have a go!
3) Meet ‘Frank Sinatra’, 'Elton John' and ‘Madonna’ – a host of great tribute bands
Music and live entertainment is all part of the daily fun at PSP Southampton Boat Show and for 2014 the UK’s leading tribute artists will be singing their hearts out for the gathered crowds. ‘Might be Buble’ will be a blast, and also performing are incredible Madonna, George Michael, Elton John and Frank Sinatra tribute acts.
4) Ride the Boat Show Eye for an amazing view of the Marina
For just £3 per person you can take a very memorable and uplifting ride on the PSP Southampton Boat Show Eye, and get a spectacular view of the show from 100ft up!
From the family sized capsules you’re treated to a 360 degree panoramic view of the Show and boat-filled Marina.
5) Try out a yacht, powerboat or RIB with OnTheWater.co.uk
The hugely popular Try-a-Boat feature, organized by www.onthewater.co.uk, is back again for 2014. This gives hundreds of visitors the joy of being out on the water in a boat, and it’s all for free. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a sailing veteran, there will be a wide selection of the very latest RIBs, powerboats and yachts to choose from, and help from experts on hand. Boats are available on a first come, first served basis, so get to the show early if you want to Try-a-Boat.
6) Go Shopping!
You’ll be amazed at how many products are at the Show for you to browse and buy. There’s a wealth of marine equipment, specialist clothing, electronics and security equipment on display with expert supplies on hand to show you how things work. From on board refrigeration to deck shoes, you’ll find loads of interesting gear whether you’re into powerboats, sailing or watersports.
7) Make waves with the Suzuki RIB Experience
If you head over to the Suzuki RIB Experience on berth M019 you can try out one of these great fun boats. The RIB used will be a 7.8m Ribcraft, powered by one of Suzuki’s V6 250hp four stroke outboard engines. This could be a great fun way to get on the water. Go to the Suzuki stand at E056 to book your place.
8) Catch the buzz around Bart’s Bash – the Largest Sailing Race Ever
There will be lots of talk at this year’s show about Bart’s Bash – a monster sized attempt to set a new Guinness World Record and raise lots of funds for the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation. On 21st September – the last day of the show – ‘the Largest Sailing Race in the World Ever’ is taking place with over 1,000 clubs around the world expected to take part.
9) Get handy with wooden boatbuilding
You can watch and learn the art of traditional wooden boatbuilding at Stand A100. A team of 15 experts from the Wooden Boatbuilders’ Trade Association (WBTA) will be presenting a wide variety of boats and demonstrating different crafts and methods of construction.
10) Go celebrity spotting!
Lots of exciting things happen every year at the Southampton Boat Show from high profile boat launches to celebrity appearances. Keep your eyes peeled for TV and pop stars, Olympic sailors and maybe even the odd Royal! Just like you, they're here to discover new things and have a great day out.
