Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2014: What’s On Shoreside?
Often referred to as the biggest event on the sailing calendar, Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week 2014 promises excitement whether you’re a shoreside spectator, or out on the water competing in one of the many races.
Thousands flock to Cowes on the Isle of Wight every year for this mammoth sailing regatta. They love the competitive racing during the day, and of course, the fun-packed entertainment and socialising in the evening.
Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week takes place from Saturday 2nd August to Saturday 9th August 2014.
What’s so special about it?
Year after year this regatta attracts world’s biggest sailing stars, creating the most amazing sailing spectacle on the Solent. For 2014 over 1,000 yachts and 8,000 competitors will be taking part in some top-class sailing. Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week stages over 40 daily races and the competitors range from Olympic and world class professionals to weekend sailors.
What’s happening for shoreside spectators?
Visitors to Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week will be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to do this year. From stunning aerial displays along the shoreline, to live music, an outdoor cinema screen, giant ferris wheel and countless swanky parties – the fun is guaranteed.

We’ve picked out some key events happening during AAM Cowes Week 2014, that are well worth catching if you’re lucky enough to be there!
Saturday 2nd Aug
The Blades Aerobatic Display Team
Not all the action is on the water. A great line up of aeriel displays will wow the crowds at Cowes Week. Don’t miss the display from the local letterbox-sponsored display team, The Blades.

Sunday 3rd Aug
Sunday 3rd August is Cowes Week Family Day with lots of family-friendly activities and music planned. Head over to Northwood House in West Cowes, and have a ride on the Giant Wheel – an ideal vantage point to watch the sailing from. You can also make use of an Outside Cinema, showing The Goonies at 7.30pm. Other films are shown throughout the week.

Weds 6th August
One Hour Victory Race
2014 marks the 80th year of the Victory Class and to celebrate, the Class will be holding a first-time event at Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week. On Wednesday 6 August the class will bring onboard the regatta’s family of sponsors for the ‘One Hour Victory’ race with each partner providing two sailors to represent their company.
Each Victory racing in this special anniversary race will have a handpicked crew provided by title sponsor, Aberdeen Asset Management, Official Supporting Sponsors, Chatham Marine, Gill, BOSS Watches, local letterbox, Mount Gay Rum, Volvo Car UK, Official Suppliers, Solent Events, Britannia Corporate Events and Official Charity, UKSA.
The ‘One Hour Victory’ race will start at 5.30pm. The one-design race is aimed at raising awareness of the growing fleet of Victory’s who race out of Portsmouth and Gibraltar. The event will provide a shore-based viewing platform from the Green during Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week and offer spectators an onboard feeling of the nation’s greatest sport.

Thursday 7th August
Mount Gay Red Cap Party
Aberdeen Asset Management Cowes Week is famed for its lively shoreside festival atmosphere and one of the most popular parties is the Mount Gay Red Cap Party. Expect a Caribbean vibe with live music, Mount Gay cocktails and a coveted Red Cap for the first 500 ticket holders to arrive.
6pm – 2am - Mount Gay Rum Red Cap Party (tickets available for sale at the bar)

Friday 8th August
A spectacular fireworks display has been held on the final Friday of Cowes Week since the very early days – it’s an integral part of Cowes Week and a fitting end to the action-packed regatta.
This year’s display takes place on Friday 8 August at 9.30pm. For a great view, head to Cowes Parade, Castle Hill, or Princes’ Green. The display is so big you’ll see it from Egypt Point, and East Cowes Promenade. If you’ve got the cash you can watch the display from the water, courtesy of Red Funnel and their Fireworks Cruises.
