A survey of canal-side British boatyards has noted that 14 are in need of protection to preserve them. The report, which was carried out by Adams Henry Consulting (AHC) on behalf of British Waterways, looked at facilities and condition of 16 boatyards along the 100 miles of canals under its jurisdiction in London. Outling the need for preservation measures, Ian Runeckles, London Planning Manager for British Waterways, said: "Boatyards are an essential part of the inland waterways' infrastructure. They provide a living, working link between the canals' historic and modern day use and are vital for supporting the growth in boating. "The boatyards on our canals and rivers in London offer a broad range of facilities, from simple re-fuelling stops and slipways to full boat building services. AHC have provided us with an excellent audit of existing facilities and a useful planning guide for local planning authorities and the GLA." News of the report follows British Waterways' granting MSO Marine Services a new lease covering dry dock facilities on Johnson's Island, which will see the historic site returned to full working order.
