The first-ever glass reinforced plastic dinghy in the Victory class has been launched at Portsmouth.
Lady West, wife of one-time First Sea Lord Admiral Sir Alan West, blessed the boat, dubbed Zafirah, this weekend at Camber Dock, Old Portsmouth.
However, while the new 21-foot clinkers' deck and hull are fashioned from GRP, the rest of the deck trim, spars and the interior are made of wood so as to maintain the vessel's distinctive appearance.
Developed by David Heritage Racing Yachts of Cowes, the craft's design includes features to ensure buoyancy, as well as ensuring that it meets requirements stipulated by the Recreational Craft Directive Category C for inshore sailing.
The Victory class takes its name from Admiral Nelson's HMS Victory, with the vessels traditionally using all-wood hulls.
A Victory class race has been run at Cowes ever since the inception of the class in 1934.
