Improved revenue from US boat sales coupled with greater participation levels in 2006 bears testimony to boating's burgeoning popularity and accessibility, according to the National Marine Manufacturers Association.
Statistics from the National Marine Manufacturers Association show that total new boat dollar sales edged upward two percent to $11.5 billion - helping the industry to post record income from US sales and services of $39 billion.
Meanwhile, it was also revealed that the numbers of people participating in boating grew from 71.3 million to 73 million – equivalent to one third of the US' adult populace.
Commenting on the figures, Thom Dammrich, NMMA president said: We are excited to see boater participation increase to 73 million because it reinforces our belief that more and more people are finding out that getting out on the water is one of the best ways to relax, have fun and enjoy time with friends and family."
The survey did, however, flag up a five per cent decline in powerboat sales to 219,000 total units.
This was outweighed by sales increases of ski and wakeboard boats, canoes and kayaks.
