Sunny weather in the South of England has seen increasing numbers of boaters opting to register their boats early despite the increase in the cost, it has been revealed.
Statistics from the Environment Agency show that up until the end of May some 250 more privately owned boats are registered than they were at the same time last year as boaters sought to take advantage of the sunniest April on record since 1942.
It is thought that the introduction of new payment methods - including direct debit or via the telephone - which make paying the charge easier than before have also contributed to the growth in registrations.
Eileen Mckeever, Thames Waterway Manager said: "We are very pleased with the numbers of private powered boats that have registered so far this year. At the end of 2006 the overall number of registered private powered boats was up.
"These figures are very encouraging given the increase in the boat registration fee. We will continue to monitor numbers and hope that we will see an overall increase at the end of 2007."
Visitors to the Thames are now able to pay by card at the locks at Eynsham, Kings, Godstow, Osney, Caversham, Sonning, Shepperton, Sunbury and Teddington.
