Changes in price of marine diesel to be discussed

Proposed changes to how marine diesel is priced are to be thrown open to public comment. The government has announced that it will launch a public consultation next week on the matter, after the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) questioned how problems over availability and pricing would affect recreational boaters. Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) are said to have a number of options that might be pursued, depending on the results of the consultation. One possibility is that red diesel could remain available at the waterside for both recreational boaters and commercial operators to use, but with recreational boaters paying the full duty rate. The RYA and BMF (British Marine Federation) are both asking for an explanation as to why recreational boaters might have to pay the full road duty rate for marine diesel - HMRC have agreed to provide this explanation. The public consultation process will begin this week - members of the public, boating organisations and the marine industry are all invited to contribute.
