A Hampshire tall ship crew came to the rescue of seven French sailors in the mid-Atlantic after their yacht became stranded in stormy conditions.
The 43-foot Sun Odyssey Zouk, had been drifting for six days before the Tenacious was alerted of the situation and departed from its planned route to Antigua in order to rescue the Frenchmen.
After saving half of the distressed crew, the Tenacious skipper attempted to tow the yacht but this proved too much for the tall ship and so a collective decision was made to sink the stricken vessel so that it would not be a danger to any other passing boats.
Amanda Butcher, chief executive of the Jubilee Sailing Trust, told the Hampshire News: "I am delighted that the crew of Tenacious responded so quickly to this call for assistance."
"The safety of those sailing was the primary concern to both crews and this is why the decision was taken to transfer the crew off the Zouk and to sink her."
"I am extremely proud of everyone who took part in this rescue. They demonstrated their professionalism and expertise and are a credit to the Jubilee Sailing Trust and our work."
The Tenacious had been sailing from Gran Canaria to Antigua and is still on course to reach its destination before Christmas.
