Green technology company, Voller Energy, has joined forces with yacht designer Ken Freivokh to create a pioneering fuel-cell powered yacht. The 55-foot concept cruising yacht will be the first of its kind, and is to be powered by Voller's Emerald fuel cell system, which aims to revolutionise power supply in the marine industry by providing clean, safe and reliable electric power. Stephen Voller, chief executive of Voller Energy commented: "It is the potential reliability and ease of maintenance of the fuel cell which are its main attributes to the boating world, due to the nature of this leisure pursuit during passages you can be a long way from a service yard and need to trust and rely on your chosen electrical supply." Less bulky than a traditional engine or generator, and much better for the environment too, the fuel cell's compact design and ability to provide a constant supply of energy also opened up new possibilities for Freivokh, including more space below the deck and more opportunities to introduce electric-powered home comforts into his design. Freivokh, a keen sailor who has worked for prestigious brands such as Sunseeker and Nautor's Swan, was optimistic about the future of this technology in the sailing industry, saying: " A future yacht in five years time will be aimed at designing the whole yacht round a cell and accommodating a fuel cell will be standard issue in the marine design industry."
