Hilary
Lister, UKSA
Ambassador for Disability, is making the final preparations for her latest
challenge, a solo sail around Britain in her 6m Artemis keel boat ‘Me Too’.
Hilary, 36, who sailed into
the record books in 2005 by becoming the first quadriplegic to sail solo across
the English
Channel, is due
to depart Dover at 14.00hrs on Monday 16th
June 2008.
Hilary, who uses a ‘sip and puff’ system
of straws to control her sails and tiller, is supported by her own team which
has managed her training schedule and will be providing safety cover throughout
the challenging voyage. UKSA is delighted to have been able to provide skills
training to her crew and a base for her preparations.
Simon Davies, UKSA Director of Coaching says, “The scale of the
task that Hilary is attempting should not be underestimated and completing the
voyage will be an iconic achievement, only made possible by her grit and
determination. Not only will she have to contend with the tough and
unpredictable challenges presented by the voyage, but in addition, she is faced
with the demands of her disability. Whilst she simply passes them away as an
inconvenience, I have great admiration for her drive, determination and appetite
for adventure."
Hilary comments, “Sailing around
Britain is something I have planned to do for a
long time and I have weighed up the risks involved and the sheer magnitude of
the task. This is my dream and I hope to inspire people from all walks of life
to achieve their personal dreams, whatever they may be. I also aim to raise
awareness of disabled sailing and to raise money for our charity – Hilary’s
Dream Trust.”
