Manufacturers of radar reflectors used by small vessels have been urged to conduct a review following the release of a report into the sinking of a yacht in the English Channel.
The Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) concluded this week that the Ouzo, which sunk last year claiming the lives of three sailors, was either swamped or capsized by the wash from a P&O ferry.
The Pride of Bilbao was criticised for various watch-keeping failures and for not stopping to investigate.
In response to the findings, the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) has warned its members of the dangers faced by larger vessels.
RYA training manager James Stevens said manufacturers of radar reflectors, which are designed to ensure small boats and yachts are picked up on radar, should look at how "overall performance" could be improved.
"Recreational skippers who cross the channel regularly know that they cannot rely on ships to alter course for yachts or even to pick them up on their radar screens," he added.
The Ouzo was on its way from Bembridge on the Isle of Wight to Dartmouth when it went missing on the night of August 20th last year.
The bodies of its three-man crew were subsequently recovered.
