Ben Ainslie Admits He 'Might Not Even Sail' at the 2017 America's Cup
In an interview with Reuters, the business, financial and investing news website, Ben Ainslie proposed the possibility that he 'might not even sail' in the 2017 America’s Cup with his Ben Ainslie Racing (BAR) team.
Recently, he has been busy building the foundations of a British team to challenge Team Oracle for the cup in a few years time. Ainslie stated: "We are a British team," confirming that at least five of his eight-man crew will be British nationals, picked from the wealth of veteran and young British sailing talent.
We are very fortunate that it happens that the key guys we identified were British, both in the design and sailing front.
We have a mixture of guys, some with experience of previous Cup campaigns and some younger talent coming through, particularly British talent who race in 49ers and classes like that. It's about putting a group together and working out how the relationships work.
Ainslie went on to admit that his busy schedule organising his team, securing funding and finding designers has limited the amount of time he’s been able to spend on the water recently. He is still determined to be on the British boat in 2017, but did say:
If we were going racing tomorrow I would be steering the boat, but maybe that's not the same answer I would give you in a couple of years time.
BAR's Sailing Team Manager, Jonathan 'Jono' Macbeth, victorious in three previous America’s Cups made it clear that the whole team is desperate for Ainslie to be steering the ship in 2017.
The guy has five Olympics medals so it would have to be someone pretty special to come along and take the helm from him
