Best of Boating: Summer events on the Norfolk Broads in 2015
Around a third of UK boating holidays take place within the Norfolk Broads where five rivers flow through lush marshland and reed swamps to the coast. These are the Bure, the Yare, the Ant, the Thurne and the Waveney.
Boaters love the sense of space, abundance of wildlife, calm waters and open skies. The Broads themselves were manmade when in Medieval times peat was dug from the riverbanks for fuel, and over time rising waters filled the excavations.
There’s a wealth of activities to enjoy here – sailing, walking, wind-surfing, canoeing, fishing, cycling. If you’re on a boating holiday it’s a pleasure to simply cruise along the expansive waterways, spotting bitterns, kingfishers, otters, and cranes. The Broads are home to one of Britain’s largest and rarest butterflies – the Swallowtail. You can moor up for lunch and a pint at a beautiful waterside pub, and pick up great local produce at villages such as Acle, Reedham and Woodbastwick.
