Can’t Afford a Cabin Cruiser? Build a ‘Caterveran’ like this Pensioner
Pensioner Peter Thurston from Herne Bay in Kent was in the market for a boat to while away the hours on the water. Despite owning a number of small yachts over the years, a new cabin cruiser appeared to be out of his budget. However, with an old caravan sitting in his front drive, he decided to put his small budget into converting the caravan into a seaworthy vessel.
At 81-years old, it took Mr Thurston a number of years to get round to finishing the design for his hairbrained scheme doodled on the backs of envelopes. Thurston settled on the straightforward but far from elegant method of bolting his old four-berth caravan on to a catamaran hull filled with hundreds of empty two litre plastic bottles.
The Caterveran now floats along the waters in Faversham, Kent powered by a small outboard engine. Although the Caterveran may not be the most desirable boat on the water in Kent, for £5,000 Thurston has a fully mobile boat with a kitchen, shower and double bed onboard.
Watch Peter Thurston explain his invention and see the Caterveran in action below.
