Thames gets new patrol boats

The Port of London Authority (PLA) has officially named two new award-winning harbour patrol boats which will serve the Thames between Putney and Teddington.

The specially-designed catamarans, Richmond and Chelsea, were named by local MPs, Susan Kramer and Justine Greening, and it is hoped that they will to help build on the area's reputation as a centre for rowing and sailing. Read More...

RNLI tipped to take over Loch Ness rescue service

New plans could see the Royal National Lifeboat Institution (RNLI) take over the operation of the rescue service at Drumnadrochit, serving Loch Ness.

Operations at Drumnadrochit are currently run by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), an executive agency of the department for transport, but the organisation approached the RNLI in late 2006 with a proposal to hand over control to the charity. Read More...

IWA condemns licence proposals

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has attacked plans by British Waterways (BW) to increase licence fees by almost a third.

Under the new proposals, the cost of a licence would increase by about nine per cent a year in real terms, meaning a compound increase of nearly 33 per cent over the next three years. Read More...

IWA tells British Waterways to rethink mooring provisions

The Inland Waterways Association (IWA) has called on British Waterways (BW) to "get sensible" with regard to mooring provisions, to try and keep boating affordable.

The IWA is also pushing BW to consider more affordable alternatives to fully serviced marinas, as the House of Commons select committee report on Britain's waterways has voiced concerns over BW's introduction of tendering for moorings, which might make boating a more expensive, and hence more exclusive, pastime. Boat registrations up on Thames

Sunny weather in the South of England has seen increasing numbers of boaters opting to register their boats early despite the increase in the cost, it has been revealed.

Statistics from the Environment Agency show that up until the end of May some 250 more privately owned boats are registered than they were at the same time last year as boaters sought to take advantage of the sunniest April on record since 1942. Read More...

BMF welcomes inland waterways removal from punitive EU legislation

Help site launched for IWA festival goers

Waterway cargo up 9%

The amount of cargo carried on Britain's inland waterways rose nine per cent last year, according to new figures released yesterday, as the UK's aquatic arteries become of increasing importance to the UK economy.

In 2005, seagoing as well as non-seagoing traffic carried 49 million tonnes of cargo on Britain's waterways and they were busier than in the previous year with non-seagoing traffic increasing by 31 per cent, according to figures from the Department for Transport. Read More...
