Extreme Sailing Series Act 5 Results
Crowds at Cardiff Bay witnessed incredible scenes this weekend as the Extreme 40 fleet battled it out in Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series. The fight for first place went right down to the wire, with Alinghi, The Wave, Muscat and J.P. Morgan BAR clashing in an intense final race.
Cardiff has become a venue that many competitors look forward to in the Extreme Sailing Series calendar. This year, Act 5 of the Extreme Sailing Series fell on the same weekend as the Cardiff Harbour Festival, which guaranteed huge crowds to watch the 11 strong fleet battle it out. The Cardiff Harbour race course is infamously tight, and the races this weekend were no different.
Act 5 marked the halfway stage in the entire Series. Alinghi came into the event leading the pack ahead of rivals The Wave, Muscat. After the first day of racing, on home turf, Ben Ainslie’s J.P. Morgan BAR team found themselves in the lead, with SAP Extreme Sailing team close behind in second. The maneuvering through the tight course proved too difficult for the Groupama sailing team and GAC Pindar as a collision between the two forced them to sit out the remaining two days of racing.
On Day 2, Alignhi and The Wave, Muscat regained their form and went into Day 3 on course to take the win. The third day saw The Wave, Muscat and Alinghi taking it in turns to take the top spot and J.P. Morgan BAR’s solid performance meant they equalled Alinghi on points going into the final race, both sitting just 7 points behind The Wave, Muscat.
It was all to play for in the final race, which began with The Wave, Muscat dominating. Astonishingly the three teams contending for first place all heavily crashed into one another forcing them all to take a penalty turn. Alinghi managed to regain a few positions, pushing J.P. Morgan BAR to third place overall, but despite finishing last, the other teams’ misfortune allowed The Wave, Muscat to emerge overall winners of Act 5.
