Fantastic Weekend of Sailing Predicted for the Laser Europa Cup at WPNSA
Great Britain’s 2014 Laser Europa Cup event kicks off today (Friday 30 May) at the Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Academy (WPNSA), as some of the most skilled single-handed sailors fight for their place on the podium.
Held on the same waters used for London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic sailing competitions, the Europa Cup series is part of the Europa Cup Trophy which consists of 20 well-established regattas around Europe from April through to December. The regatta will meet its climax on Sunday 1st June when winners from Laser 4.7, Laser Radial and Laser Standard classes will emerge.
On Sunday, the Laser Europa Cup will hand over to the Sail for Gold competition, which has traditionally been a flagship event for the WPNSA. After previous successes, the Sail for Gold event organisers are expecting a star studded line-up as a number of familiar faces return to the sailing venue where their 2012 Olympic and Paralympic fates were decided.
The first of three Laser Europa Cup races scheduled today will begin at 13:00. The Laser Radial fleet in particular is shaping up to be a close fought race, with a number of British Sailing Team members battling it out. The weather forecast for the weekend is looking decent, so organisers are expecting a great weekend of sailing for everyone participating.
