Legendary all-women team in Volvo Ocean Race wears Helly Hansen
Team SCA is the first all-women team to compete in the Volvo Ocean Race for more than a decade.
The all-female team selected Helly Hansen as its official clothing partner for its leading technologies and innovative Scandinavian design. The clothing brand has developed a technical range of kit, especially for the team, which will keep them protected from the harsh environment and looking stylish in uniform.
Team SCA will be racing for the next nine months in one of the world’s toughest races. The 38,739-nautical-mile-long race is fraught with danger from the Southern Ocean’s boat-crushing ice to the Indian Ocean’s unexpected tropical cyclones. Team SCA will race six, all-male teams around the world, spending up to 25 days at sea at a time.
The Volvo Ocean Race departs from Alicante, Spain on Saturday 11 October 2014.
Clothing to endure for the 9-month race
With a wide product range in offshore clothing, baselayers and footwear, as well as a line of marine-inspired sportswear, the company covers all the requirements for the nine-month race.
Working with Team SCA, Richard Brisius, says, “Team SCA has rigorously tested Helly Hansen’s kit since we first started training in early 2013. We have worked with the brand to develop a specific range of women’s-specific offshore sailing apparel. This clothing will have to face some extreme conditions and it will play a critical role in the team’s performance.”
Unwilling to compromise between style and performance, Helly Hansen blended its next-generation technologies with a visually powerful team design and the female anatomy in mind. Team SCA’s classic marine blue uniforms with eye-catching magenta colour blocks will keep the crew unified, stylish, and highly visible in rough waters.
The gear is built to endure the most challenging sailing conditions on earth.
Erik Burbank, Vice President of Global Marketing for Helly Hansen, said: “We developed our first ever women’s-specific sailing collection to be the epitome of style without compromising performance. Team SCA is taking on every imaginable ocean environment and their gear will keep them safe and visible in a crowd or out on the water.”
