One Week Sailing Trip Turns Into 16 Year Round-The-World Adventure
Back in 1998, Clive and Jane Green left for a week-long sailing holiday to Ireland and Spain. They left in their 35ft sailing boat named Jane Green bought for £16,500 from Pembrokeshire, West Wales.
16 years later, they have just returned from a spontaneous round-the-world voyage that took them to 51 different countries.
The retired couple decided to take Jane Green from Spain to the Cape Verde islands. 2700 miles from home, the couple did not look back and continued on to Barbados and all around the Caribbean. From the Caribbean they moved along the east coast of the US, on to Canada, then down to the Panama Canal, all the way over to Australasia, through South-East Asia, India then back to the Mediterranean. To make ends meet, they lived on £130 a week and traded possessions with locals in exchange for food. The couple never planned too far ahead and would pick their next destination based on recommendations of fellow sailors along the way.
On their journey they encountered a wide variety of wildlife, had a run-in with Somali pirates and met people from all walks of life. The couple plan on spending a few months in UK with family and friends, but are already planning a boating trip along Europe’s canals.
