San Diego and Bermuda Race Toward Finish Line to Become 2017 America's Cup Host Venue
With the host venue for the 2017 America’s Cup still undecided, Bermuda and San Diego, the two remaining candidates, are now making final pushes to secure the 35th event.
San Diego’s attempt to convince the organisers of its credentials takes the form of a flashy video highlighting many reasons why San Diego is the ideal venue for the 2017 America’s Cup, promising a 'revolution in stadium sailing'.
The main claim that sticks out is that San Diego Bay can guarantee wind over 8 knots, 93% of the time, therefore offering a reliable TV schedule. The city's other bragging rights include its experience in hosting other international events such as the Superbowl, World Series, U.S Open golf, FIFA World Cup and also previous America’s Cup events in 1988, 1992 and 1995. With this experience, San Diego claims to be able to create a 'memorable, magical, sports and spectator experience'.
Despite San Diego’s flashy video, its appears that Bermuda's Great Sound could still be in with a chance as Italian sailor and America’s Cup tactician for Luna Rossa Challenge Francesco Bruni recently praised the potential venue after scouting it out earlier this week. Bruni is currently in Bermuda defending the Argo Group Gold Cup title. Rossi said:
We are in Bermuda and I was just curious to check out the potential race area.
I have been here a couple of times already and know this little corner here in Hamilton Harbour — but I didn’t know much about the potential racing area.
It’s good to have a look around and I think it’s a good place. The space is big enough and I have always liked Bermuda and I think you guys have good potential (to host 35th America’s Cup).
Also this week, Sir Ben Ainslie, who Rossi narrowly beat in the last Argo Group Gold Cup, released a video showing his British team’s 45-foot catamaran foiling near Southampton for the first time. Ainslie describes the progress his team has already made but is cautious of the long way to go until racing begins in 2017.
The venue 35th America’s Cup will supposedly be announced at the end of this year, but many believe that it will come earlier given the current buzz around the event.
