Video: The speed and silence of Moth Sailing
As part of its ongoing Get Afloat campaign, the RYA has been talking with International Moth sailor Chris Rashley about the class and the incredible feeling of foiling.
Rashley has been sailing Moths for five years and takes time in this inspirational video to describe the pleasure he gets from the sport, and the breath-taking silence that can be experienced when foiling at top speed.
“The silence happens when you start to go up on the foil – it’s an incredible feeling,” says Rashley.
Describing the speed he can achieve and the sensation of flying across the water, Rashley says the key to enjoyment is understanding what the boat is capable of doing.
“It’s about keeping the boat on the edge and knowing what the limit is,” he says. “It’s not about worrying about coming off, because generally you only know you’ve come off after you’ve come off.”
Sailing alone on his Moth has delighted Rashley for five years but for him Moth racing is the ultimate experience. “It’s the absolute pinnacle of high performance sailing.”
