What's On at the 15th Crick Boat Show?
It’s nearly Crick Boat Show time, and now in its 15th year, this well-established waterways festival looks like a winner! Expect the usual laid back atmosphere, fascinating products for sale, new and classic boats on the land and water and top class musical acts throughout the weekend. Organisers promise family fun, exploration and entertainment and the programme for 2015 certainly looks impressive. Crick Boat Show this year takes place from 23 to 25 May, at Crick Marina, Northants.
Here’s a taste of what to expect at this year’s Crick Boat Show – now much loved in the boating calendar as the UK’s only inland waterways boat show.
Meet the exhibitors
A host of boating expertise will be set up on the Crick Marina quayside. High quality exhibitors from every aspect of inland boating welcome you inside their marquees to browse and chat. This year at Crick there will be over 200 exhibitors, including chandleries, boat builders, brokerage and boat services. Take your time browsing stands selling general goods, and arts and crafts, from specialist narrowboat furniture (www.elitefurnishings.co.uk Stand Q28) to boat coating products (www.hempelyacht.co.uk Stand KF43/44) to original paintings (www.waterwaysartist.co.uk Stand KR3).
Boatbuliders to look out for include BlueWater Boats, who will be showing off their stunning 59ft Bespoke Narrowboat ‘Ruby Twosday’, MGM Boats of Leicester, and the Northwich Boat Company from Cheshire.
Learn and discover
Crick Boat Show is the place to immerse yourself in narrowboat history, boat maintenance and the world of restoration and conservation of the canal network. Inland waterways heritage is a passion for many here, so catch one of the many seminars, and take time to chat to representatives of associations and clubs, who are more than happy to share information about their causes:
Residential Boat Owners Association (Stand KF84)
Dudley Canal Trust (Stand KF91)
BMF Midlands www.bmfmidlands.co.uk (Stand Q22)
Free boat trips
Experience the feat of Victorian engineering that is the Grand Union Canal while you’re at Crick Boat Show. Visitors can take a free trip out onto the water, to get a real taste of our country’s rich canal history, and take in the beautiful Northamptonshire countryside.
Boats that give insights into canal history come to Crick. Pictured above is Aldgate, a Town Class (Large Woolwich) steel motor boat, built in 1936 for the Grand Union Canal Carrying Co by Harland & Wolff at Woolwich on the Thames at a cost of £900. This was a working boat right into the 1970s. Find out more here.
Live music and more
Every year, Crick Boat Show hosts a wide selection of music and high quality performers – so while you’re here catch some Americana, Blues, Classic Pop, Cajun and Gypsy Jazz. This year the headline act on Sunday night is iconic1980s singer Hazel O’Connor who will be joined, live on stage, by Clare Hirst (Bellestars, Communards, David Bowie) on sax and Sarah Fisher (Eurythmics) on keyboards.
For Saturday night Crick is welcoming back Murphy's Marbles and Sean Cannon of the Dubliners, after their barnstorming closing set at Crick 2014!
Need we mention the well-stocked Beer Tent, fabulous food options, and children's activities and rides which are all completely free of charge.
