Who was L.T.C. Rolt?
Rolt was originally an engineer, and he wrote classic biographies of Brunel, Telford, Treithick and the Stephensons. His unerring passion for Britain’s industrial heritage is now widely celebrated.
What is Narrow Boat about?
Back in 1939 Rolt took a journey on his boat Cressy that took him over 400 miles along the network of canals in the Midlands and the Grand Union, and on to the Trent & Mersey and ending at the Oxford Canal. He wrote charmingly about life on the boat, how he and his wife made it their home, and the timeless beauty of the countryside they boated through.
Why was it so powerful?
Richard Parry, chief executive of the Canal & River Trust, said: ““Britain is blessed with the most incredible system of canals and rivers, fashioned 200 years ago, and which
enrich the lives of millions of people today. It is perhaps easy to forget that there was
a time, not so long ago, when their very existence was threatened.
He added: “Rolt’s Narrow Boat inspired a remarkable campaign that saved our waterways and whose impact continues to be felt. This special anniversary edition is dedicated to the countless volunteers – past and present – who saved our waterways and keep them alive for everyone to enjoy.”
