Mira is an historic 1936 72ft Walkers of Ricky traditional Star Class motor boat. I restored her to liveaboard status whilst working as a professional historic narrow boat builder and restorer.
Follow me “@canalboat” #mycanalboat then go to recent on instagram for more photos of the restoration journey and launch 135 pics . She is currently moored in Hertfordshire on the Grand Union Canal.
This is a rare and unique boat, one of the very few that have survived the years and would have traditionally been part of a pair of working boats (the other being the butty unfortunately no longer around) working the canals up and down the country.
(Reference: Walkers of Ricky by Anthony J Walker, 1991)
It has: a traditional back cabin connected to the engine room with a working JP3 diesel engine; a main cabin living space with kitchen, bedroom and lounge area; an outdoor space; and, a bathroom in the prow complete with a brass fittings, mini roll top bath shower, sink and an oak toilet seat.
The gas tank is in the prow and boiler and pumps in the bathroom. The original oak flooring runs throughout the boat. She can sleep 5 people: two in the traditional back cabin and 3 in the main living space.
The main living space has a double bed, a single cot bed, an oven and two plate gas hob, sink, storage cupboards and a fridge. These are all moveable. It also has a wood burning stove that heats a radiator in the bathroom. The double oak doors to this area open out onto the front section of the boat. This section of the cabin is new and made out of laminated aluminium marine ply and insulated making the cabin cool in summerand warm in winter.
The front section of the boat between the main cabin and the bathroom has canvas tarpaulins in a traditional style which can be rolled back on warm summer days with enough space for a fold out table and 4 chairs.
We’ve really enjoyed our time on the boat restoring and living on it and hope you do too in this special historic space. We are sad to let it go and would love to see her go to other serious canal boat enthusiasts.
