Classic 22ft Bermudian Sloop Z4 Harrison Butler

A pocket cruising yacht of proven and elegant design, traditional construction,. Zircon is one of about fifty examples of a Z4 tonner class built during the 1930s and 40s approx half of which are believed still to exist.
She was purchased 2007 by the present owner.
Her accommodation provides two berths in a single cabin with a paraffin cooker, portable chemical toilet. Basic freshwater system.
Fractional Bermudian sloop rig with single wooden spreaders swept aft slightly, and forward-swept jumper struts. Simpson Lawrence powered windlass controlled from the cockpit. The Jib has a Wykeham Martin furling system.
She is to be refitted, bright work re done, engine serviced. launched, back afloat onto her summer swinging mooring.

Construction

Carvel-built wooden hull with cast iron ballast keel;
sheathed wooden deck and coach roof with hardwood coamings
Ballast 1016 kg (approx)
She had been surveyed shortly before her purchase in 2007. Work carried out after that report included work on the engine, the fitting of a new shaft coupling, and general improvement of the electrical system and navigation lights. Maintenance and other work carried out by the owner (sometimes with professional assistance from local shipwright Fabian Bush) included renewal of the deck edges and toe rails, the chain plates and anchoring gear. During the past winter the owner has refastened the below-waterline plank fastenings of forward and aft hood ends, and has rebuilt and refurbished the wooden mast whose glued seams had separated in places.
The yacht’s visual appearance is good, the main structures of hull, deck and keel in good order; new plank fastenings have been fitted ( forward and aft hood ends). The rudder, rigging attachments, deck fittings and hatches are found to be secure
Original deck has been covered with marine ply, epoxy sheathed and painted with non slip paint.

Accommodation

Two opposing settee berths in a single cabin with berth cushioning.
A Taylors two-burner paraffin-fueled cooker with hotplates and fiddle is rigidly mounted in the galley, with yellow metal fuel tank.
No freshwater tank was fitted at the time of survey as water was carried in plastic cans, and a hose could be inserted into the can in use to supply the yellow metal hand pump mounted at the galley (a filler cap had recently been fitted on the side deck in preparation for the installation of a water tank
A Porta Potti chemical toilet is mounted beneath the fore peak hatch.
Traditionally-arranged accommodation with furnishings in good visual condition, including: white-painted deck head, deck beams, and hull skin and reinforcing members (where readily visible); varnished coach roof coamings, tongued-and-grooved main bulkhead, galley surfaces and engine cover; and a bare planked hardwood sole.
