Still considered by many as the pinnacle of build quality and blue-water comfort - the Hallberg Rassy brand needs little introduction. "Castor" is an exceptional example of the type. Purchased from new by her fastidious British owner, she has been rigorously maintained and has a vast array of options for long-term living, to include generator, water-maker, heating, Cruising chute and davits. Her centre cockpit design and large owners cabin has clearly been the culmination of decades of Builder know-how, arguably offering the perfect platform for World Cruising. See owners comments at the end of the Specification for a further insight into her design.

    Owners Comments
In the winter of 2007 my wife and I, with two crew members, collected Castor from Sweden and in just over six days sailed her directly back across the North Sea to Southampton. We experienced ice in the Skagerrak, heavy seas and constant high winds reaching force nine in the North Sea but never once did we feel unsafe. Since then, as a couple, we have cruised the Channel Islands, Northern and Southern Brittany and the Vendee before crossing Biscay and heading for warmer climates. German Frers design for the HR37 with a full deep hull, long fin keel and large skeg hung rudder gives her all the advantages of a traditional long keeler, yet few of the disadvantages, she will find her groove and sit there all day regardless of what the wind and sea throws at her, the motion is comfortable and she will look after herself with little input from the autopilot. Over-canvased in severe conditions she will dip her toe rail until green water runs along the side decks but never a hint of broaching, in these conditions she will out perform many larger, lighter boats When compiling our wish list we decided not to fit a bow thruster as we felt the maintenance and fouling problems would outweigh any benefits, after 8 years we stand by this decision, the 54hp motor, large powerful three bladed propeller and low windage all help to make her very manoeuvrable under most conditions. Like many boats of her style she suffers from a strong prop kick which we have learnt to use to our advantage. Having spent the equivalent of at least one or two years anchored, I believe the deep full hull with a high ballast ratio of 42% helps to keep her more stable than many lighter, flatter bottomed modern yachts that tend to roll easily. In 2013 the hull was stripped back by hand to the original epoxy undercoat sealant, the lead keel then received a new epoxy undercoating before four coats of Coppercoat antifoul treatment was applied below the waterline. This has proven to work well, however parts of the keel had started to peel due to either bad adhesion between the lead and epoxy or incorrect application. In 2015 the keel was sanded down and again epoxy sealed before receiving a further four coats of Coppercoat, being careful to follow correct application procedures. Before deciding to apply this antifoul system we read and heard many opinions from both camps and can now honestly say we do not regret our decision to go ahead. Castor's teak decks are treated each year with Boracol as recommended by Hallberg Rassy and in summer receive a daily wash down with sea water.
