"HTS" Souter's built Don Shead design 33ft offshore powerboat

In 1969 transport and distribution magnate Ralph Hilton commissioned Souter's to build a 33ft Don Shead design for offshore racing to be known as "HTS" and be powered by Leyland diesels. Constructed from double diagonal cedar with a mahogany skin, to be lightweight yet very strong.  She was entered into the first Round Britain Race in 1969 but the engines proved unreliable for the punishing conditions. One engine broke away and dropped into the bilges then in the later Cowes Torquay race another failed just after the start line. In 1970 the engines caused more problems and the decision was taken to change the units to Ford based turbocharged Sabres and although less powerful than the Leylands proved ultra-reliable and propelled the craft much faster.

HTS was entered into the recently announced 1972 London Monte Carlo Marathon and underwent many structural modifications plus upgrading the engines which had their output increased from 250 to 300hp resulting in speeds approaching 55mph. 15 days after the June the 10th start HTS arrived in Monte Carlo and was propelled into the history books by winning 8 of the 14 stages that totaled nearly 2400 miles at an average speed of almost 42mph in the process she also took home 29 trophies and a substantial amount of cash.

After a successful season in 1972 she changed hands several times and was named I LIKE IT by new owner Charles Gill. Complete with a new engine layout, stern drives instead of shafts and in Charles hands took the class championship in the British series. She was then sold again in 1975 to John Craxford and re-engined with the latest Sabre 365's again taking championships aplenty.

Up for sale again in 1978 she was purchased by David Hagan, revamped and renamed APACHE she took the 1979 season by storm winning David the British Championships for classes 1 and 2! and then the European Championships, not bad for a 10-year-old race veteran.

Her racing years over she was displayed on loan to the Basildon Powerboat Museum. The subsequent dramatic closure of the museum found her back in storage in Hampshire and although not officially up for sale was purchased after secret negotiations by Nick Wilkinson in 2011.

With the announcement of a re-run of The London to Monte Carlo Race for 2013, HTS underwent a full restoration which took almost a year of preparation and a year of refitting. Sponsored by Perkins, HTS went to Poole Docks, adjacent to Sunseekers for the works.

Perkins supplied two M300C six-cylinder turbocharged diesel engines, which were mated to ZF 220 boxes 1:1 ratio. R and D couplings linked to Clements shafts and Lancing Marine surface drives. A bespoke steering system using a single centrally mounted rudder was designed. Bespoke triple ram tabs with twin pumps were added to complete the running gear.

Completely rewired she has 3 electric high capacity bilge pumps and the starboard engine has an additional 1 3/4" solenoid operated suction pump. All new Perkins guages and digital readouts give instantaneous engine information. Raymarine Navigation with repeater for the driver. HTS has been refitted to comply to RYA race scrutineering procedure. Greytronics intercoms will be included with 2 in helmet headphones and mics.

The engines were installed by Perkins and maintained by them for 3 years, the engines have now done 110 hours and have had fluids and filters changed annually even though these commercially rated engines have a service interval of 500 hours!

She currently runs at 50 MPH + but of course her hull design allows those speed to be achieved in quite rough sea conditions.

    He most recent racing.

2013 The Venture Cup, some 750 miles in 4 days, she won class and the environmental trophy.

Winner of The Sonny Levi Trophy.

2014 Second in class in the Cowes Torquay, beaten by the mighty Dry Martini number 9.

2015 Cowes Torquay, we hit debris off Anvil Point, damaging a drive.

2016 Ferocious weather saw just 2 boats finish The Cowes Torquay with many boats damaged. We retired at The Needles Channel.

2017 Falmouth for Class win and 4th overall.
