The Gem was designed by Rob Humphreys in the late 70’s to The Micro Ton one design rule conceived by the impecunious but enlightened French Yachting journalists at Bateaux. Max LOA 18 feet, max beam 4 feet and Draft 3 foot 3 inches and unsinkable. Camping accommodation was required. The Gem was immediately successful, winning the production class in the inaugural championship due to a very sweet set of lines. Early signs of Rob Humphreys obvious talents.

The Tadpole project was conceived as the very smallest boat that you could sail in a club cruiser racer class with two people. Small to keep the marina costs down and small enough to trailer home behind a normal car and keep in the back garden out of season. However still fast enough to keep up and race with other club boats. Due to the fair-weather nature of the owners, the boat is optimised for local, light wind sailing. It is not an offshore boat. The modifications have been extensive and are listed below. No changes to the original hull shape have been made.

The glass/polyester balsa hull has been faired and painted with epoxy primer. The topsides painted with Durepox and the under body with Copper Coat epoxy/copper antifouling.
New forestay fitting/reinforcement added to the bow and new side stay fittings with internal carbon fibre reinforcement. Carbon mast step, hatch bridge and traveller beam. Athwart ships jib tracks. An Intermediate modulus carbon prepreg bowsprit is fitted externally, (to preserve water tight integrity).
The Selden twin spreader carbon rig is from the Backman 21 specification with 25 degree swept back lower spreaders alleviating the need for a backstay and accommodates the large roach mainsails. There is a very lightweight custom rectangular carbon pre-preg boom.
The lifting keel is a cut down Melges 24 Carbon foil with a 250Kg Lead T bulb, using the Rogers designed Artemis 20 low drag bulb pattern. The keel can be retracted for trailing using a Spectra rope/pulley system. There are internal profiled UHDPE keel partners with two depth settings. The keel box has been strengthened internally with carbon fibre athwartships stiffeners and the floor stiffened with extra layers of carbon.
The transom hung rudder is removable and made using a pre-preg carbon internal spar and foam/carbon blade. It is set on carbon pintles and integral carbon gudgeons.. Most deck fittings are Harken.

There are two film mainsails which are cut down Tornado mainsails. There are two custom made Batt Sails Dacron jibs. One with full length tapered carbon battens, both with hanks. There are also 3 Star jibs with zips which fit perfectly. There are two asymmetric Spinnakers, one custom made by North sails in 2012, when the boat was last sailed. A storm jib and rule only staysail completes the wardrobe.

The boat has an internal moulding which doubles as both internal buoyancy and bunks, with three berths. There is a rudimentary cooker module, fitted bucket and internal storage. There are two integral 125L buoyancy bags to compliment the internal buoyancy, and a removable crash bulked just aft of the bow. An internal gel battery has its own solar charging system, mini switch panel, internal light and lighter socket for a handheld VHF charger. This also powers a Garmin chart plotter on an internal bracket which swings out into the hatchway.

The trailer is modified with custom made poppets, which fit the hull perfectly. There is also a lightweight mast lifting system with which it is possible to raise and lower the mast with one person. There is an IRC cert at 0.831 and a VPRS cert at 0.804
