This craft was built by the renowned boat-builders - R. Lower & Sons, Newhaven. Well known for their ability to build craft for fishing off the Sussex coast - and elsewhere. Built in classic cllinker form with beam to length proportions enabling the craft to allow their crew to work in often uncomfortable waters of the English Channel. These craft were all hand built.

From Fore to Aft: From hog to gunwhale, all hull timbers are single lengths laid in clinker form and copper cleanched. Forward she has a 'bluff' form which allows the beam to run well forward. Equally, the stern maintains the beam by use of the Lutern stern - rising from the keel and curving 'up and out' to the stern rail. A cut-out in the stern allows an outboard engine to fit through the construction and so bring the propeller close to the keel. At the same time, it allowed the engine to be brought up when under sail. The generous beam is made possible by the thwarts and the substantial knees fitted in pairs each side. Further stiffening is by upright, full width, members close to the stem and aft as part of a broad seat, full width of the craft. A central keel box is also fitted with cross members, again acting as seating, but primarily providing stiffening to the widest section of the beam. The result is a strong open craft capable of working offshore, whether netting or line fishing....or just under sail for enjoyment!

This craft is equally happy under sail. The masts are both stowed within the length of the craft, together with the 'sprit and bumpkin. The standing rigging is simple with twin stays to Port and Starboard all with lengths of cordage for securing and adjusting tension. The main & mizzen sails are laced on their yards and hoisted by cordage and hoops. Easily raised and lowered by hand. The mizzen is a standing lug sail and the main uses the dipping lug principle when tacking. Both the jib and foresail provide not only good directional control but also provide a forestay function. Sheets for the Main and Foresails come aft to the stern seat. The galvinised steel centre-board keel pivotes aft within the keel box, with a line and fastenering cleat. Both ends of the keel-box are integral with the thwarts, again for further stiffening of the hull.

The craft has a 2-wheel Indispension galvinised Roller Coaster 1 trailer with brakes, lightboard and cable.

NOTE: It is understood that in 2004/5 the entire surface - inside and out - of this time (Mahogany on Oak) craft - was stripped back, epoxy coated and a number of varnish coats applied. She looks almost new, particularly with her white underwater surfaces and boot-topping.

OWNER'S COMMENTS: 'Believed to have been built in the 1950's, I purchased her in 1993, extensively re-fitting the craft throughout. I have used her as a trailer/sailer from Cornwall to Scotland including the East Coast.'

BROKER'S COMMENTS: These Newhaven-built craft - in the yard we are now based - were very popular and remain so for their build quality, good sea-keeping characteristics and, more recently, their value as a classic built sea-going open craft. Her excellant condition is the result of her owner who has truly looked after this beautiful piece of British built craft. Much cared for and a fine open sea boat.
A Suzuki 4-stroke 5ph engine - new in 2003 - is included together with 2 x 5 gln plastic fuel cans and a 5 gln plastic water tank.
    Sails and Rig
The three sails (see picture) were new in 2004 and made by James Lawrence (Sailmakers) Ltd in Tan Clipper Canvas (a soft but tough material). Hand-stitched with 2 rows of reefing points and laced on their spars. They remain in good conditon.
2 x Spruce oars, leathered and varnished. They remain in good condition and stow within the boat length. There is an over-all boat cover as well as a camping boom tent.

Mooring lines, fenders, a galvinished grapel anchor and 2m chain and 20m warp are included.
    Broker Comments
Seen by the Broker on the occasion of viewing, at the same time taking the photos used in this specification. A joy to find one of these craft in remarkable condition. The owner continues to 'go fishing' as his hobby, off the Sussex coast.
