Great example of this late model Najad 391. Launched in 2001 and with boasting a fantastic cruising specification. Low hours and very well maintained.

Listed in association with our Scottish partners Mark Cameron Yachts, FARAHBOUT is a very well presented example of the popular Najad 391. With only her third owner since new she has been maintained to a very high standard by three very consensus owners. Bought by current owners in Holland she had previously been very lightly used for cruising on the inland seas.

Built by one of Europe’s premium boat builders the quality of finish above and below decks is excellent with the wood work and upholstery throughout the accommodation in excellent condition for a boat of this age.

    Her specification highlights include:-
    Blue style lines
    Teak decks
    Skeg-hung rudder
Yanmar 71hp engine with low hours
    Holding tank
Raymarine instruments with radar and chart plotter
    AIS transponder
    Eberspacher diesel heating
    Force 10 stove
    Forward shower
    Removable inner forestay
Selden RCB car system with fully-battened mainsail
    Cruising chute
    Recent sail wardrobe
    Sprayhood and cockpit tent

I sold my Jeanneau Sun Legend in 1995 with the intention to move to a heavier cruising boat. However, family and business conspired to curtail my sailing.

Following retirement in 2012 I decided to invest in another boat to be enjoyed by my sons and grandchildren. I also harboured hopes of reliving “glory days” with my old crewmates.

After a visit to the boat show in London an old friend suggested I would get far more satisfaction from a pre-owned quality cruising boat than the current high-volume production boats. Having always admired the flush deck look of the Najad 391 together with the inherent strength and quality the search began. I considered three vessels in UK, but on examination found them a little tired if not heavily worn. Deflated by the results of my search to date I was reconsidering my options when I spotted a 391 for sale in Netherlands. I called Kees Hundersmark of Najad Benelux, who simply stated “if you want a 391 you will buy this one”! A visit to Haven Kloosternol found my boat in their show hall indistinguishable from the new boats on display.

It had been commissioned by an elderly gentleman who had rarely used it and never slept aboard. After a short time, it was purchased from him by his friend, a family man, who sailed (Baseline) lightly; primarily on the Ijsselmeer; with indoor winter storage. Unfortunately the second owner had relocated for work and his family had moved away, making keeping the boat impractical. Until my ownership in 2013 it had rarely seen salt water.

After successful survey I became the proud owner of my very own Najad 391. I considered sailing home but felt I was probably too rusty to be comfortable. Delivery crews discounted, I decided to bear the cost of road transport to Whitehills in NE Scotland.

My hopes of reliving glory days with old crew did not materialise and family could not commit to my timescales of meaningful cruising. Turning the age of seventy I find it a little too big without regular crew and my wife, who is no sailor worries if I am on my own.

Farahbout is a great boat and I enjoy the maintenance programme but reluctantly now must downsize.

The Najad 391 is designed to be a modern long distance cruiser with the highest sailing performance.
The keel and rudder are built up by NACA wing sections. The fin keel is relatively long for good course stability and motion at sea.

The ballast lead keel with a ratio of 44% is bolted on and a small wing at the bottom of the keel reduces the water flow and which results in less drag.

The rudder is semi-balanced with a strong half skeg, which ensures steering is light and positive.
This combination of keel and rudder design enables the boat to have a turning circle of her own length.
The hull, keel, rudder and rig design have improved the sheeting angles to 10/14o and this has resulted in improved performance and speed.

The strong bottom grid and stringers are laminated into the hull in order in order to take the external rig loads.

An integral swim platform is built into the stern for comfort and security.

The 391 has an open and uncluttered flush deck with a small coachroof aft which improves headroom in the aft cabin.

The windscreen is forward of the instrument panel in the cockpit to create more space below the sprayhood.
The cockpit recesses in the coamings are flush which gives a more comfortable backrest.

Below deck the layout is basically the same as in many other Najad models. Our experience this has shown that this layout proves to be the best at sea.

Based on modern techniques and many years of experience the Najad 391 is a product of perfection from Najad.
