    You’re Emotional…

As Human beings we make decisions based on our emotions. And then justify them with logic.

You might like to think that’s not the case, but you’re wrong.

And even big decisions can be made in an instant. A single, instantaneous, emotional trigger that, more often that not, you don’t even realise.

When I’m not obsessing about boats, my other passion is fast cars. I reckon this is something to do with me basically being an overgrown child… I operate on a very simple emotional level…. It’s something that I’ve realised I share with many of my customers!

Anyway, to scratch the fast car itch again, I recently bought a classic, original, Mercedes E55 AMG. It’s a 155mph super saloon that does 0-60mph in 5 seconds. I must admit, whether it can legitimately be called a ‘classic’ is up for debate, but it’s certainly quick.

The reason for this digression is that the day I bought it, is one of those rare times when I was able to pinpoint exactly the split-second when I decided, “I’m buying this car”.

You see, I didn’t need the car (a point which my wife regularly reminds me of). I have been talking about buying a weekend car for ages and I’ve looked at plenty, but never bought… Because I didn’t have that crucial emotional impulse.

It was a different story when I looked at my new baby…

First of all, I should tell you that my father had a Mercedes E-class (exactly the same body shape and colour) when they first came out. I remember the excitement when he bought it. It was just released and he had to pre-order it from the factory. I was into my cars back then too and the wait for the car to come was more excruciating than the run-up to Christmas.

When it arrived, it was the first one in town and it was the business. Now, it had a fairly conservative engine option (not the stonking 5.4L V8 in the E55), which my father had insisted upon despite my urging that he go for the big motor, but I had come to accept that. The only real tinge of disappointment I felt when the car showed up was just how much was missing from the options list… There was a big wide dashboard with an embarrassingly small number of buttons on it. As a gadget lover, I couldn’t understand why my Dad had denied himself all the extra toys he could have had!

Don’t ask me why, but I thought the ultimate option (which of course we didn’t have) was an electrically operated rear window blind. I think I liked the thought of it so much because it’s just so frivolous and unnecessary; a complete indulgence. I just thought if we had that then the car would be complete.

Well, fast forward 18 years and as I slide into the classic Merc in front of me, all my childhood memories of being wafted about in my father’s car come back to me. And even better than that, it had a huge number of switches peppered all over the dash board, from heated seats to headlight washers and a power boot release. There was also one button with a funny icon on it that I didn’t recognise. When I pressed it, low and behold, a rear window blind slid seamlessly up out of the rear parcel shelf…

    That was it.

In that very instant I made my mind up that I wasn’t leaving without this car.

On the test drive, my only requirement was that the wheels didn’t fall off! In terms of my rigorous inspection, everything after seeing the window blind was really superfluous. It didn’t matter, because I had emotionally decided that I had to have the car.

What followed was the most half hearted bit of haggling I have ever engaged in and I tipped on out of there, as the proud new owner of a ‘classic’ Mercedes.

I reckon, the day you buy your next boat will follow a similar pattern, whether you are consciously aware of it or not. Something about the boat will resonate with you, whether it’s a childhood memory, or something you’ve always dreamed of having, or a flash of insight into the fun that you will have on board with your friends and family in the future. Whatever it is, if it’s not there, then I know you won’t be buying.

That’s the reason why I never go in for the hard sell. I won’t ever try to rail road you into buying something that’s not right for you.

My job is to present each boat I sell in the most comprehensive way I can and then stand back to see if the emotional magic happens for you.
