WINDY 36 Grand Mistral, Open Cockpit

A fantastic opportunity to buy what many people in the trade consider is simply the best sports-cruiser in her class for a very realistic price. This particular boat has been fastidiously maintained since 2004 when I bought her and she has had a very pampered life from new (3 careful previous owners). Professionally maintained all her life, used regularly and kept ashore in MDL drystack since 2010, she looks and performs like a boat half her age and she represents a great deal for her next owner so please read on.

    Lady Zingala

    Builder: Windy Boats AS, Norway
Year of Construction: late 1995 (She starred at the 1996 London Boat Show, Earl’s Court)
    Year Commissioned: 1996
LOA: 35’6” (10.79m) without tender (11.2m with tender)
    Beam: 11’6” (3.5m)
    Draft: 3’ (1.0m)
    Air Draft: 11’5” (3.5m)
Displacement: Estimate 6 tons (6100kg) fully loaded
Registered Tonnage: 11.17 (British Registry of shipping). Part 1 registered vessel
Engines: 2x Volvo Penta KAD42P (2x 230hp), Compressors and Turbos
Drives: 2x Volvo Penta 290hp Duo Prop outdrives, aluminium CRPs
Hull Colours: Dark blue / light cream
Hull Profile: Full planning, deep ‘V’ bow section moving to 20 deg deadrise at stern, spray rails and hard chines running full length of hull

The classic Hans J Johnsen design from Windy Boats AS has changed very little over the two decades of production, with only a minor modification to the above-water bathing platform layout differentiating between the 36’ and 37’ Grand Mistral models. Back in the ‘90s this timeless design not only set the benchmark for all the other manufacturers to aim for but it has hardly aged at all since then and so these sought-after boats can still turn heads and look very contemporary today.

In June 2005, Steve Curtis MBE (eight times offshore powerboat racing World Champion) was asked to judge the Windy 37 Grand Mistral (identical below-waterline hull design to this boat) against five other competitors, including a Fairline Targa 34, a Bavaria 37 and a Botnia Targa 35. His goal was to determine the best handling 35’ sports cruiser on the market. His conclusion: The Windy was the clear winner in terms of ride comfort, performance, cornering, helm layout and steering response.

Windys are built to cope with the North Sea by traditional craftsmen, using the best of both old and modern technologies. The hull is balanced beautifully with a low, mid-ships centre of gravity giving the boat great balance, stability and control in all types of seas. The ride is always predictable, forgiving and is dry in head seas and following seas alike. The open cockpit layout plus a strong, new camping canopy gives the crew countless ways to enjoy their time at sea. The deep V bow section cuts through Solent chop without much slamming. She gets up on the plane at around 12 knots, she cruises very economically at 25 ~ 26 knots at 3000 RPM and she has been up to 37 knots at full power (3,600 RPM) although I confess I very rarely take her there as life is much more relaxing at cruising speeds.

What makes this particular boat such a good deal?

    • Part I register of British Ships until 2019 (so you will know exactly what you are buying with confidence)
    • She has been kept ashore all year round in MDL dry stack storage since May 2010, which has all but halted the aging process. She is only launched on demand and when the fun is over she is lifted out, washed all over in boat wash + fresh water and returned to her dry stack berth with shore power
    • Hull is as dry as a desert having spent last 7 years berthed in dry stack. No fears of osmosis here. Any survey welcome (at buyer’s expense)
    • Purely for cosmetic purposes this summer (June 2017), all the old flaking International Ultra antifouling was removed (which I had applied back in spring 2010) right back to the gelcoat, I then sanded down everything by hand, applied 4 coats of SeaJet epoxy resin followed by 2 coats of SeaJet Coastal grey hard antifouling which is specifically designed for hulls that dry out and is good for speeds up to 70 knots. Photos of work available.
    • Outdrives, 4x props and transom plates were similarly overhauled with new paint, new UJ and exhaust bellows, new anodes (June 2017). Gearboxes, shafts, props, leg tilt rams, shaft seals, power steering and Bennett hydraulic trim tabs are all in good working order
    • Engines and outdrives professionally serviced every year from new (full service history available right back to 1996). Last serviced April 2017. Original Volvo Penta parts have always been used throughout and years of receipts and invoices are available as proof
