A rare and exciting opportunity to buy a boat of great ethnic importance almost unique in Europe.

A Jangada --- a Brazilian Beach Fishing Raft ---- a sailing vessel almost neolithic in style and construction.

Built in the traditional way and for most of its existence exhibited in a boat museum. It is registered in the UK National Small Boats Register under number 2502 (this is a register of interesting and important boats in the United Kingdom but does not prevent export or require an export licence).

    Length and beam in metres: 5.97 m by 1.22 m: (19ft 7in x 4ft)

This example is considered to be more authentic than the one held by the National Maritime Museum Cornwall. (GH & LKB May 15 Rating 4 World collection).

It is a boat that is well adapted for launching off the long flat breaches of north-east Brazil. Initially these boats were basic rafts propelled by paddle. Portuguese colonialists are said to be responsible for giving them a lateen rig similar to those seen in Polynesia and South India. It is probable that the name comes from the Hindu word Janga.

It is a log raft built on the North East coast of Brazil using traditional techniques and materials. Six carefully chosen logs of a balsa type wood, possibly Ceiba are held together with wooden pins without any metal fastenings. A helmsman’s seat and, steering support and the mast step are held on the raft by rope lashings and made of hardwood possibly Dalbergia. The posts used for lashing the sheets are possibly Avicennia. The centre board and elegant steering oar are also probably made from Dalbergia but certainly a local hard wood.

The long and rather flexible mast has a cotton sail lashed to it bearing advertising for a defunct Brazilian bank. The sail is weather-beaten but might be serviceable. Consistent with age, evidence of past woodworm in places

These boats are important in Brazilian culture not only because of their distinctive elegance under sail but also because those who sailed them (the Jangadeiros) are important figures in campaigning against slavery in Brazil and in fighting for social justice.

The boats and their sailors are a symbol of Brazil and thus this boat would make a wonderful display in a Brazilian themed restaurant or bar.

There are many literary references to them. Jules Verne wrote a novel La Jangada. There are many poems and ballads about the exploits of those who sailed them. Orson Welles directed a film about them in 1941 – Four men on the Raft which gives a very good account of their construction and use and links to the social history and issues.

Buyer to collect from Lymington, Hampshire, England, UK. Please note the trailer is not included.
