    Owners Comments
BACKGROUND I purchased the boat in Maine USA in 1999/2000. Previously she had been cruised in the Caribbean and East Coast of America. I was attracted by the simple and easy to handle rig as I was to be short handed for a lot of the time. There was also plenty of space below for a large family which coupled with her very stable characteristics and a good sized deep and well protected cockpit, gave confidence to all. I brought her over with 2 friends in 2000 where she showed her pedigree in some difficult weather: We cruised her as a family in the Azores in 2000 and more recently in 2006: the Spanish Rias for 4 seasons and also France and the Argarve. In between we also cruised extensively the UK South West Coast from her home port near Plymouth and in 2009 to West Coast of Scotland for 10 weeks and South and West Ireland 2011. Most of the family cruises were with friends of the children; In 2006 we cruised the Azores with 8 onboard for 3 weeks which sounds testing but with the fantastic cockpit, large tankage and gentle sea motion, even the novices had a good time. The reason for sale is anno domino. The timing could not have been worse, as over the last few years considerable efforts (and money!!!) have been invested to upgrade her for our sailing retirement but now due to ill health we have to consider the unthinkable. The goodnews for a prospective purchaser is that she is in fantastic condition with an inventory to cover most cruising grounds. HOW DOES SHE GO TO WINDWARD? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iFle9YZCzLw This is a common question after someone has made sufficiently appreciative noises about the boat that they think they can now ask the slightly pointed question which they have been dying to ask from the beginning. To be truthful, it is OK. It is not up to a modern fast cruiser but is quite acceptable. I have “raced” against others and hard on the wind she achieves a similar track to a cruising ketch of a similar age. But where the fun starts, is anything slightly off the wind. Here the combination of the unstayed masts, fully battened sails and a hull shape which compliments her ability make her invincible. We won a well contested cross channel race much to the disgust of the second place, a brand new Dufor 40 in full racing trim and hairy arsed crew. Very satisfying! It is not just how well she goes, but also the lack of fuss it takes. The only sheet which needs to be winched is the main and then only on the wind. The mizzen can be done by hand. All sheets are to the helmsman’s hand. Going about is as simple as putting the wheel over. Rarely does any water find itself aboard.
