    Installation: 1996 by Bowman Yachts, Ocean Quay, Southampton. Installed in a Bowman 40 yacht.

    Total hours: 2330 hrs

    Major service items: April 2003, approx 750 hrs: New seawater pump (SAL Marine)

    July 2009 , approx 1200 hrs: Timing belt replaced (Multi Nautique, Folleux, France)

    May 2012, 1680 hrs: Injectors removed and serviced, water pump overhauled and seals replaced

    Aug 2015 – 2050 hrs: Engine compression tested (Ropewalk Marine) : Dry Test #1 360, #2 360, #3 310, #4 220. Wet test: #3 400, #4 365



    Service History

    The engine is installed in a Bowman 40, built in 1996 by Bowman Yachts in Southampton and in its second ownership. From new, the engine was service annually by SAL marine in Lymington. When the previous owners moved the boat to France, the engine was serviced annually by engineers at La Roche Bernard and then by Multi Nautique, who replaced the timing belt in 2009.

    The boat was sold to the current owners in September 2009. The engine has continued to be serviced at least annually or every 200 hours by the current owner. ‘Fuel set’ fuel treatment has always been used in the fuel since the engine was new, and both fuel filters replaced at each service. The oil filter has always been replaced with each oil change. Gear box oil changed annually. The engine has been winterised every winter whilst the boat has been on hard standing.

    Engine Hours

    As is apparently usual with Volvo Penta tacho meters, the hours counter only displays in hot dry weather so I did not know the accurate engine hours until we first took the boat south to sunny weather in October 2010. Prior to this date engine hours are estimates. In May 2013, a second hours counter was installed, so after this date engine hours are accurate.

    Owners comments

    The engine is in very good condition and runs faultlessly, although as you would expect for a 20 years old / 2000 hr engine it’s starting to getting a bit noisy. It has always received meticulous care and attention by both owners. Since the injectors were cleaned in 2012, there is comparatively little ‘black smoke’. The engine is getting harder to start and so we had it compression tested in 2015, which indicated reduced compression on cylinder #4 due to warn piston rings. Although not life threatening for the engine we have decided to replace it now as we are planning a big trip in the boat in the next few years and wanted to get the benefit and reassurance of a new engine installed in a ‘controlled fashion’ in the UK (I have heard too many bad stories of people trying to perform engine replacements in far flung places!!)
