Description
The originally built icebreaker/tugboat has been converted by the current owner into a spacious houseboat. The extended wheelhouse now also provides space for a living room with an unobstructed view of the surroundings. With the installation of solar panels and a water filter, the ship is completely self-sufficient and ideal for long journeys/stays. The owners have invested a lot in the ship, and it is now ready for the next owner; come and take a look soon.
Layout
Through the spacious gangways, the wheelhouse/living room can be accessed from port, starboard, and the aft deck. With many double-glazed windows, this is a pleasant living room with an unobstructed view of the surroundings. A staircase leads to the spacious kitchen and bathroom. Here too, the many windows provide ample contact with the environment. Under the foredeck, the first bedroom/study is accessible with sufficient headroom. From the living room, another staircase leads to the spacious master bedroom. Here, built-in wardrobes have also been installed under the gangway.
On the aft ship, there is a large terrace above the bedroom and an even larger terrace on the aft deck with electric davits for the dinghy on the aft deck. An electrically operated hatch provides access to the storage space under the aft deck.
History
In 1936, the D-423 was launched at the Meidericher Schiffswerft in Duisburg, Germany. The ship was built on behalf of the German government and was equipped with a steam engine. It served as a tugboat on the north coast of Germany. The hatches through which the coal was brought into the hold are still present on the port side.
In earlier times, when winters were harsher, it was common for the coastal waters to be covered with a layer of ice. For this reason, the part of the bow that is underwater is twice as thick as the rest of the underwater hull to also serve as an icebreaker. In 1951, the steam engine was replaced by a Deutz diesel engine (slow runner).
Technology
The propulsion is provided by the slow-running Deutz engine with approximately 275 hp at 341 rpm. Additionally, an electric bow thruster from Duco was added in 2023. The silent generator of 10KW was installed in 2022, along with the traction set of 1000A, Victron inverter/charger, and solar panels. Double glazing has also been installed, and the kitchen and bathroom were renovated in 2022.
Heating is provided by the Kabola combi boiler (2022) and the air conditioning unit (2023). In 2023, the hull was inspected, and a large part of the aft underwater hull was replaced. The CBB/CVO certificate does not need to be renewed until 2030.
Navigation Area
The navigation area of the Orion is primarily the larger (coastal) waters due to its dimensions. With the powerful main engine and bow thruster, many places are easily accessible.
Due to its semi-historical appearance, the ship is welcome in the ports that are part of the Schepencarrousel. Currently, about 27 ports are affiliated with this organization.
