Description
1958 Bjarne Aas IOD Uffa Fox once described International One Designs as lovely little ships, with lines as elegant as a smelts. The International One-Design (IOD), conceived by Norwegian designer Bjarne Aas in 1936, is a classic racing yacht renowned for its elegance and performance. Built to foster competitive sailing under equal conditions, the IOD features a distinctive design reminiscent of the Six Metre class. The first fleet began racing in 1936 on Long Island Sound, quickly spreading to various countries, including the UK and Canada. Despite challenges during World War II, including the preservation of construction jigs, the class thrived post-war. The IOD has become a staple in yacht racing, with over 150 boats actively participating globally. Characterized by its mahogany planking and robust construction, the IOD is not only a competitive racer but also a delightful day sailer, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate both speed and beauty on the water. Today, the IOD continues to be celebrated for its rich heritage and enduring appeal in the sailing community. This example built in 1958 in Norway was one of the last to be built in wood with subsequent yachts being constructed in fibreglass. She has been well maintained by her home boatyard (service records available) but would benefit from more regular use which time and distance have precluded under present ownership.
